- Understanding Your Bill
- Understanding Your Invoice
Medical billing can be confusing due to the number of independent parties involved in each encounter, and the medical jargon used in the billing process. For example, for any test or procedure there is often a bill from the hospital for providing the facility, a bill from the person performing the test, or bill for interpreting the results, or even a bill from the billing organisation on behalf of one of the above. Insurers too, often cover part of the cost of a procedure, and so can send you an outstanding amount or shortfall/excess for items that are not covered by insurance. In essence, a single procedure can result in multiple bills from multiple companies, which can be confusing, and patients often believe they have paid for a test or procedure already, when in fact, they have only paid for one part of the consultation /test/procedure.
For consultations, tests, and surgery you should be clear of what the total cost will be, and whether this is for one eye or both.
Mr Harsum is part of a group of consultants in Surrey known as Consultants Eye Surgeons Partnership LLP (CESP Surrey LLP). Collectively, they use a billing organisation known as Medical Business Management Solutions (MBMS). You may get an invoice on behalf of CESP Surrey for Mr Harsum via MBMS.
MBMS invoice for outpatient appointments, surgery and implants, and in some cases, outpatient tests.

- Surgery with Special Lenses
Special order lenses (Toric and multifocal) have a hospital fee for the lens itself, and there is sometimes a surgeon fee associated with special order lenses, for the extra time to discuss the pros and cons, selection, insertion, and tests / procedures after surgery.
It is rare for insurance companies to cover the cost of premium lenses. You should always ensure your insurer is up to date with your claim and that you have provided them with the procedure code for the surgery you are having and any lens/implant/treatment which is to take place. Procedure codes can be obtained from the Hospital or Mr Harsum’s secretary. The Hospital or CESP will invoice patients direct for premium lenses or implants prior to planned surgery/treatment.
